The General Department of Roads has issued a decision to conduct a surprise inspection of toll collection activities at Dau Giay Toll Station (Dong Nai), after the robbery of more than 2.2 billion VND in toll collection money at this toll station (on February 7) caused many controversies about the actual toll collected and reported. Dau Giay Toll Station is managed by Vietnam Expressway Engineering Services Joint Stock Company (VECE), under Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC).
The inspection team of the General Department of Roads will work at Dau Giay Toll Station for 5 days, starting from February 18, 2019. The scope of the inspection includes the organization and operation of Dau Giay service toll station.
Director General of the Roads Department Nguyen Van Huyen said that to ensure publicity and transparency, the Department has also requested the Investigation Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security to coordinate in this inspection. However, according to Mr. Huyen, the detailed contents of the inspection team at Dau Giay Toll Station cannot be announced yet (such as whether there was an actual vehicle count? Was there a review of video recordings of the days when tolls were collected?...), when there is an official conclusion, the details will be announced publicly to the press.
At the time of the robbery, Dau Giay Toll Station had more than 3.23 billion VND in the safe. VEC explained that this was the amount of money from 8 toll collection shifts (each shift lasted 8 hours) from February 4-6, 2019, small change for toll collection and reserve fund. Meanwhile, some people said that this was only the amount of toll collected in 1 day of this station.
According to VEC's report, the average total revenue of the 3 toll stations on the Ho Chi Minh City - Dau Giay Expressway in 2018 was over 3.1 billion VND/day and night. Of which, Dau Giay station was just over 740 million VND/day and night, Long Phuoc station was over 1.5 billion VND/day and night, and National Highway 51 station was over 914 million VND/day and night.
