"If you had a teacher who knew about guns, he or she could have ended the attack very quickly," President Trump said during a meeting with students who were lucky enough to survive the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Mr. Trump said that training teachers to use guns is to fight against attackers, but also admitted that this is a controversial view.
“I don’t understand how you can just go to a store and buy a gun,” Sam Zeif, 18, sobbed during a White House meeting. The gunman used an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to randomly attack and kill 17 students and teachers at his school on February 14.
As he reassured students and parents, Mr. Trump pledged to push for stricter checks on gun buyers and sellers so that the shooting tragedy would not happen again.
"We're going to do a very thorough review. This is not going to be just talk like it has been in the past," Trump said.
President Trump’s announcement of support for tighter gun laws and regulations marks a major shift for the Republican Party. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump received significant support from the National Rifle Association (NRA).
