Scotland asks UK to approve independence referendum
Scotland on March 31 sent a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May about holding a second referendum on separating from the UK, exacerbating the crisis caused by Brexit.
"The people of Scotland must have the right to choose our own future, in short, to exercise self-determination," AFP quoted Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon writing in a letter to Mrs. May.

Ms Sturgeon has offered to start talks on triggering Section 30 of the Scotland Act 1998, which would allow for a referendum. Ms May has received the letter.
The Scottish Parliament voted 69 to 59 earlier this week to hold another referendum. But they cannot hold a referendum without London's consent.
Scotland in 2014 rejected separation from the UK with 55% of votes, but in 2016, 62% voted in favor of remaining in the European Union (EU).
Prime Minister May has insisted that “now is not the time” for another referendum. She is facing a two-front battle as she seeks to negotiate a good Brexit deal while also dealing with nationalist sentiment in Scotland.
