Three defendants in the Binh Phuoc massacre will be extradited to Ho Chi Minh City for appeal trial. |
On the afternoon of June 24, the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that it will bring the case of the massacre of 6 people in Mr. Le Van My's family to the appeal trial on July 18. The trial is expected to last for 2 days.
The High Court also said it would transfer the three defendants from the Binh Phuoc Provincial Police detention camp to the High Court headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City for appeal hearing.
This is the third scheduled appeal hearing. Previously, the High Court had scheduled the trial twice, the first on March 21 and the mobile trial scheduled at the Binh Phuoc Provincial People's Court headquarters on May 12.
At the first instance trial on December 17, 2015, the People's Court of Binh Phuoc province sentenced Nguyen Hai Duong (25 years old, residing in An Giang) to death; Vu Van Tien (25 years old, from Binh Phuoc) to death, and Tran Dinh Thoai (28 years old) to 16 years in prison for the crimes of "Murder and Robbery".
The first instance verdict determined that Nguyen Hai Duong and Ms. Le Thi Anh Linh (22 years old, daughter of Mr. Le Van My in Chon Thanh district, Binh Phuoc province) had been in love for a while. In early 2015, Linh broke up with Duong.
Nguyen Hai Duong was resentful and had the intention of killing his ex-lover's entire family to take revenge. Duong asked Thoai to join and Thoai agreed, but then changed her mind. Thoai was also the one who bought more knives for Duong to commit the crime.
On the morning of July 7, 2015, Duong and Tien broke into the villa of Mr. My's family in Minh Hung commune, Chon Thanh district, Binh Phuoc province and committed the crime. Tien restrained the victims so that Duong could directly use a knife to kill 6 people in the house.
After the first instance verdict, Duong did not appeal, Tien and Thoai appealed for a lighter sentence. The victim's family representative also appealed with the hope of clarifying some issues related to the case.
