The Washington Times added that the design is a “leap forward” in the development of “asymmetric weapons” capable of countering nuclear attack. It is expected that Zircon will be deployed on the Piotr Veliky nuclear-powered cruiser.
Analysts say the missile is capable of flying at 4,600 miles per hour, six times the speed of sound, making it no longer an easy target for anti-missile systems.
Russian military expert Vladimir Tuchkov stated that Zircon will be equipped for the Russian army in the period 2018-2020.
Russia and China have been searching for “asymmetric weapons” capable of defeating US aircraft carriers and protecting their countries from another nation’s nuclear attack.
Hypersonic weapons are a “quantum leap” in this direction, — the author of the article in The Washington Times concludes.
