Singapore-based shipbuilding company Suncraft International has partnered with Malaysian company Radimax Group to market a high-speed interceptor patrol boat called the Piranha ASD to Southeast Asian nations.
The Piranha ASD was initially conceived as a high-speed attack vessel, but it was subsequently modified to perform other roles such as anti-piracy, border patrol, and search and rescue. Suncarft had previously supplied a similar 17-meter version of the Piranha ASD to the Nigerian Navy.
"The collaboration between Suncraft and Radimax was established primarily to supply Piranha ASDs to the Royal Malaysian Police's Coast Guard," said Idris Othman, Radimax's naval projects manager, at the recent LIMA 2015 exhibition.
However, Mr. Othman also emphasized that, based on positive feedback, Suncraft and Radimax have received invitations to demonstrate the capabilities of the Piranha ASD to wider areas, as it is a platform well-suited to the Southeast Asian seas.

According to Suncraft, the Piranha can reach speeds of up to 40 knots and has a range of 180 nautical miles when running at 35 knots. The vessel can carry 4 to 6 crew members.
In its standard configuration, the Piranha patrol boat is equipped with two 7.62mm machine gun mounts on either side of the aft hull. Activists can also optionally equip the vessel with an additional 12.7mm remote-controlled weapon station developed by Suncraft.
Besides supplying the Malaysian Coast Guard, the vessel's capabilities have also been demonstrated to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. The company says it has access to the Vietnamese and Philippine Coast Guards to showcase Piranha's capabilities.
