As one of 24 people participating in the volunteer program in Xieng Khouang province (Laos), Quang Thang Loc, a student of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Technology at Vinh University, could not hide his excitement before leaving. Thang Loc said that this was the first time he had participated in a volunteer campaign in Laos. Being a Thai ethnic person in Que Phong, a mountainous district of Nghe An bordering Laos, Thang Loc had the opportunity to go to the Land of a Million Elephants and understood very well the hardships of the people.
“Participating in volunteering in Laos not only helps me contribute a small part to help families in difficult circumstances, but it is also a great opportunity to experience, improve knowledge and skills, and make new friends. At the same time, it leaves a good impression of the image of Nghe An students in particular and the young generation of Vietnam in general in the eyes of the people of the neighboring country,” Loc said.
The volunteer program of the students will last for 1 month (July 6 – August 6) with activities such as teaching culture, teaching Vietnamese language, promoting the image of Vietnamese people, country, culture as well as Vinh University… to the Lao people. |
Nguyen Thi Van Oanh, a fifth-year student in the Faculty of Literature and Pedagogy and also the captain of the international volunteer team of Vinh University in Laos, shared that the volunteer trip to Xieng Khouang province began accepting applications in mid-June. Out of 120 applications, the school officially selected 24 outstanding students to participate in the summer volunteer campaign in the neighboring country.
Upon being selected, the 24 students were given additional training by the school on culture, learning Lao songs, teaching Vietnamese, and supplementing pedagogical knowledge. These skills were taught over two weeks before the departure date, Van Oanh said. In addition, team members also practiced and shared information outside of training sessions to prepare for the trip.

As a girl, Van Oanh's parents were a bit worried when their daughter went to volunteer far away. Therefore, before the trip, Oanh did some ideological work for her parents as well as trained her health well. Because she not only had to take care of herself but also had to oversee the work of the whole team during the volunteer days in the other country.
"We will try our best to fulfill our mission well as well as spread beautiful images of Nghe An people and Vietnamese people to our Lao brothers," Van Oanh shared.
