They protested the decision to overturn guidelines that guide universities in handling sexual assault allegations, which Ms. DeVos said unfairly treated the accused.
The secretary said guidelines established under Democrats and President Barack Obama have led to too many students being wrongly accused and left schools fearful of being reported if they ignore sexual assault allegations.
In the face of the silent protest of the students, Ms. Betsy DeVos did not stop to talk to the protesters but continued her speech as if nothing had happened. “I have said it before and I will say it again, because the students who did this have a good reason, and there are too many false accusations.”
The U.S. Department of Education has rescinded the Obama administration’s sexual assault guidance and is making changes, a move that has been met with criticism from campus advocates and survivors of sexual assault.
Harvard is among 300 schools under government investigation for civil rights violations and sexual assault, first announced in 2014.
