Sir Alex Ferguson officially announced his retirement
Not long after the British press reported that coach Alex Ferguson would officially retire, Manchester United officially confirmed this information.
Accordingly, Sir Alex will officially retire after the match with West Brom on May 19. The Scottish strategist will continue to contribute to the "Red Devils" in the role of Director and ambassador of the club.
During his 26 years with MU, Sir Alex helped the Old Trafford team win 38 major and minor titles. He is often honored as one of the best coaches of all time.
In a statement posted on MU's official website, the 71-year-old strategist said: "I have thought a lot about the decision to retire. It was really difficult to make this decision but I think this is the most appropriate time."
"The most important thing for me was to help MU have a strong squad and I believe I have done so. We have won this tournament and the age of MU's pillars has become younger and younger. This is a good sign for the next seasons. I believe MU will have a bright future."
"We have one of the best youth training facilities in Europe. I am very happy to take on the dual role of director and ambassador of the club in the future. I hope I can help the club even more in the future."
Although the official reason for the decision was not announced, it is likely that Sir Alex's health has declined in recent times, preventing him from continuing to lead MU. Remember, last week, Man United's representative confirmed that Sir Alex will have to undergo hip surgery in August after the summer tour.
As planned, the surgery will only take place after Sir Alex and MU finish their 2013 Summer tour (from July 13-29). According to the schedule, the "Red Devils" will tour in 4 countries: Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. Immediately after returning to England on July 30, Sir Alex will immediately undergo hip surgery.
