Right before the Lunar New Year 2018, there was a rumor that the 200,000 VND banknote with the letters BP, AT, BS, CN at the beginning of the series was counterfeit. Is this true? And how can we distinguish between real and fake money?

Netizens are quickly sharing an article instructing how to identify fake 200,000 VND bills.

Attached is an illustration of 200,000 VND bills with the letters BP at the beginning of the series and a 200,000 VND bill punched by the bank.

This article also lists the letters at the beginning of the series in other denominations that the recipient should be wary of as counterfeit money.

This article affirms that 500,000 VND bills with the first letters of the series LF, NJ, LN are fake; 100,000 VND bills with the first letters of the series LF, FT, SG, Yi are fake; and 50,000 VND bills with the first letters of the series XP - LB - MA - SA - VR - WP are fake.

This information also warns that counterfeit money is widely sold online. Tet is coming so everyone should be careful with these coins because if you take them to the bank, they will punch holes and confiscate them.

Although this is not the first time the above information has appeared, it is right at the time near Tet when the demand for Tet shopping increases, causing many people to panic.

Ms. Le Thi Thanh Hang, Deputy Director of the State Bank of Ho Chi Minh City, denied this information. Ms. Hang affirmed thatIt is impossible to rely on the first letters of the serial number to identify real and fake money, but must rely on the security factors of the banknote.

"People should not believe in the above false rumors," said Ms. Hang.

How to identify counterfeit money

When holding the bill up to a light source, the watermark is just a simulation, without the delicate, clear printed details of real money.

The positioning image - the image on the front and the image on the back printed in the same position - does not match tightly, is not balanced and does not form even white light slots like real money when the bill is held up to a light source.

On counterfeit money, the color-changing ink is printed with gold ink, which when tilted does not change from yellow to green like the color-changing ink (OVI) element of genuine money (only found on 100,000 VND, 200,000 VND and 500,000 VND).

In addition, people can check the small window (only available in 50,000 VND, 100,000 VND, 200,000 VND and 500,000 VND), counterfeit money does not have hidden images (DOE) like real money.

Recently, criminals have counterfeited the embossed print by printing additional corresponding characters in colorless (transparent) ink in positions such as: the words "Socialist Republic of Vietnam", the letters and denomination numbers (large) on the front; the words "State Bank of Vietnam", the letters and denomination numbers on the back.

But when you gently stroke these areas, you can feel the raised surface but it is not rough or coarse like real money, to deceive the consumer's senses when checking the raised print.

In addition, all types of counterfeit polymer money are printed on a regular nylon background, so they are very easy to stretch or tear. These bills are also not durable and do not have the characteristic elasticity of polymer.

Therefore, consumers can also check by pulling and gently tearing the edge of the bill. If it is real money, it will be difficult to tear or stretch. Or, if you hold the bill in your palm, when you open your hand, if it is real money, it will return to its original state, as before you held it.
