Nghe An contains traces of human habitation from the Paleolithic period, to the New Stone Age, to the Metal Age and to history. The mountainous region of Nghe An is where fossils of both early and late modern humans have been found. The coastal region contains evidence of the transition from a natural exploitation economy to a production economy in the late Neolithic period and early Metal Age.

The Late Paleolithic period in Nghe An is identified through the discoveries of ancient people and archaeological relics and artifacts. Modern people appeared early in Vietnam, with human fossils and animal populations preserved in Tham Om, Chau Thuan commune (Quy Chau). The early Neolithic period in Nghe An is clearly marked by discoveries at Dong Truong cave, Hoi Son commune (Anh Son). The Middle Neolithic period in Nghe An is characterized by the famous archaeological culture of Quynh Van culture (Quynh Luu). The Late Neolithic period in Nghe An is shown through the cultural relics of Thach Lac. The genealogy of the Bronze Age in Nghe An is established through the links: Doi Temple - Ru Cat - Ru Tran - Lang Vac.

Through the practice of patriotic struggle, Nghe An gradually became the "navel" of the nation's elite, chosen by many heroes as their "headquarters", "a place to stand" to build a great career in the Middle Ages; chosen by the revolution and built into a "free zone", "liberated zone" in the resistance war against France, as a "fire coordinate" in the resistance war against America to save the country. Nghe An is a "base" but at the same time also an "outpost" of the expansion of the territory to the South...

In most of the resistance wars against foreign invaders of the Vietnamese people, there has always been the presence of the people of Nghe An with many glorious feats, famous in Vietnamese history.
