Sơn Tùng M-TP quickly won over many young fans with his unique musical style and fashion sense.

If "A Passing Rain" was a good omen, then "Yesterday's You" (composed at the end of 2013) was the song that propelled Son Tung M-TP to V-Pop fame. The audio version of the song achieved a record 100 million listens after 3 months, while the music video garnered nearly 50 million views. Son Tung M-TP became a representative of a new generation of Vietnamese singers, pursuing catchy electronic music and a performance style similar to K-Pop stars.

But controversy also increased with his fame. In June 2014, Huy Tuan decided to remove a series of the singer's songs from the Favorite Songs chart. This move came after experts and the public unanimously expressed outrage because Son Tung M-TP borrowed beats to write lyrics for a series of his hit songs. The singer confirmed that he used foreign background music, but he called it "taking inspiration" and not plagiarism.

Besides music, Son Tung M-TP ventured into acting with his debut film, "The Boy That Year." After filming concluded, Son Tung submitted a request to terminate his contract prematurely with Van Production, owned by Huy Tuan. The story became a topic of discussion when Van Production banned him from performing, claiming he had violated the contract. In January 2015, his former management company officially sued Son Tung. To this day, the dispute between the two parties remains unresolved.

During that time, the song "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" (Perhaps Someone Will Return) - the theme song for the film "The Boy That Year," which he composed - faced controversy due to allegations of plagiarism from a South Korean film. The incident caused a public uproar with debates lasting for a long time. Ultimately, both the Vietnam Copyright Protection Center for Music and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism concluded that the beat (arrangement) of the song was heavily influenced by the South Korean song "Because I Miss You." At the Ministry's request, the team had to change the arrangement before the song could be used in the film and released.

The film "The Boy That Year," starring Son Tung, was once embroiled in controversy surrounding its soundtrack, specifically the song "Surely Someone Will Come Back."

For this reason, the film's release date had to be postponed for a while. However, the film project was still successful and attracted a large audience to theaters, with revenue exceeding 40 billion VND. The male singer also won the "Promising Actor" award at the 2014 Golden Kite Awards, but his song "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" (Perhaps Someone Will Come Back) was excluded from the Dedication and Green Wave nominations after the controversy surrounding it.

In December 2014, Son Tung won the "Male Idol of the Year" award voted on by readers of Ngoi Sao newspaper. On stage, Son Tung M-TP expressed that with this award, he wanted to end a turbulent year for himself, marked by allegations of plagiarism and controversies with his former management company.

However, controversies throughout his career remain closely linked to his artistic activities. At the end of January 2015, Son Tung M-TP was the last name confirmed to participate in The Remix. The male singer quickly shone after the first six weeks with his unique style and ability to compose new songs very quickly. But on the night of live show 7, he caused a stir with suspicions of dropping out of the competition when he didn't appear at the dress rehearsal. At the last minute, he still appeared and performed energetically. After the show, the singer's manager, Quang Huy, explained that Son Tung M-TP had a severe sore throat and had almost accepted elimination, but for the sake of the audience, the singer still tried to quickly complete the remix for the competition.

Considered one of the most promising contestants on "The Remix," Son Tung's withdrawal from the show left many fans disappointed.

After live show 7, Son Tung M-TP officially requested to withdraw from The Remix competition due to a severe sore throat, making it impossible for him to perform at his best on stage. The singer stated that he would minimize his show appearances to recover. However, a few days later, he continued to perform at several venues with which he had previously signed contracts. This further sparked controversy.

Most recently, the music video "Không phải dạng vừa đâu" (Not Just Any Ordinary Person), directed by young director Vũ Ngọc Phượng and starring Sơn Tùng M-TP, faced two controversies simultaneously. Besides the alleged similarity in concept to G-Dragon's music video, the imagery in the video was perceived as an attack on two famous songwriters – those who had previously accused him of plagiarizing Korean music with his song "Chắc ai đó sẽ về" (Surely Someone Will Come Back). Despite denying all allegations, in the face of mixed public reactions, Sơn Tùng's team chose to withdraw the music video and produce a completely new version to replace it.
