Sony announced a plan to cut its workforce on Wednesday, with the first 15% layoffs decided in September 2014. Current Sony boss Kazuo Hirai announced that about 30% of the total number of employees at its subsidiary Sony Mobile Communications would be cut by the end of March 2016. According to estimates, this figure is equivalent to nearly 5,000 employees being laid off.
This layoff will allow Sony to save money in the coming years. According to some economists, the layoffs will force Sony to spend up to 30 billion yen in compensation in 2016-2017, but in return, the company will save up to 90 billion yen.
Facing fierce competition in the smartphone industry, Sony is reviewing its marketing and rebuilding its strategy. In fact, Sony's smartphone lines have been considered failures, especially in the Chinese market. In the Chinese market, Sony once bitterly commented that the war with local manufacturers is truly hell.
Currently, Sony wants to focus on developing in markets such as the US, Japan and France. In these countries, Sony's high-end Xperia smartphone line is rated quite well. However, in the above markets, Sony also has to face competition from other smartphone companies such as Samsung of Korea or Apple of the US.
