On Wednesday, Sony Corporation released a workforce reduction plan. The first round of layoffs, involving 15% of employees, was decided in September 2014. Sony's current CEO, Kazuo Hirai, announced that approximately 30% of the total workforce at its subsidiary, Sony Mobile Communications, will be laid off by the end of March 2016. This is estimated to mean nearly 5,000 employees will be dismissed.
This latest job cut will allow Sony to save money in the coming years. According to some economists, Sony's workforce reduction will force the company to spend up to 30 billion yen on compensation in 2016-2017, but in return, it will save up to 90 billion yen.
Facing fierce competition in the smartphone market, Sony is reviewing its marketing efforts and rebuilding its strategy. In fact, Sony's smartphone lines have been considered failures, especially in the Chinese market. In China, Sony has bitterly remarked that the battle with local manufacturers is truly hell.
Currently, Sony wants to focus on developing its presence in markets such as the US, Japan, and France. In these countries, Sony's high-end Xperia smartphone line is well-regarded. However, in these markets, Sony also faces competition from other smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung from South Korea and Apple from the US.
Founded in May 1946 by Akio Morita, Sony is a Japanese multinational corporation and one of the world's leading electronics manufacturers. Since its inception, Sony has been recognized for consistently making decisive decisions in various areas such as TVs and PCs to ensure sustainable profitability in the future.
