Sony's launch of the high-end X Performance earlier this week brought conflicting news about the fate of the Xperia Z series.

According to TechRadar, after Sony abruptly refreshed its Xperia X series with three new models earlier this week, rumors have been circulating online that Sony will abandon the Xperia Z series and switch to Xperia X as its new flagship brand. This rumor was confirmed by Sony Mobile's product marketing director, Jun Makino, in an interview with uSwitch. Shortly after, Sony's Facebook page confirmed that "there will be no more Xperia Z6" in response to a fan comment.

Sony representatives have also continued to confirm the "death" of the Xperia Z6. In an official statement sent to Tech Radar, an official Sony representative said: "While we cannot confirm future possibilities for our product line, we can share with you that we have no plans to launch the Xperia Z6 at this time. As announced, we have entered a new chapter for the Xperia brand with the launch of the X series at MWC."

Similarly, Android Authority has also received official confirmation from a Sony representative that the Xperia Z5 will be the last Xperia Z generation. The representative also revealed that the Xperia XA "may" serve as the successor to the M4 Aqua, suggesting that even the mid-range Xperia M brand has been merged into the Xperia X family.
