Revival in the Ky Son flash flood area
(Baonghean.vn) - The historic flood nearly a year ago buried the entire productive land of the people in Hoa Son and Son Ha villages of Ta Ca commune (Ky Son). On the land that was thought to be beyond recovery, a picture with bright colors is now emerging.
Green the vegetable gardens again
Returning to Hoa Son and Son Ha villages of Ta Ca commune this time, we were surprised by the lush green water spinach patches, squash trellises, bean beds, corn fields, etc.; many chicken and pig farms and a series of square fish ponds, on the banks of which are planted plants such as cassava and banana to get leaves to feed the fish. In addition to the green vegetables in daily meals, some families also have vegetables for sale.

Mr. Vi Van Hoan - a resident of Hoa Son village, is taking care of fish raised in a pond full of water and happily confided: Afterhistoric floodIn early October 2022, the entire rice field behind the house was completely buried by soil and rocks that had flown down from the hill, some of which were so large that human strength could not lift them. With the will that "with human strength, gravel and rocks can turn into rice", in early 2023, his family invested over 20 million VND to hire an excavator to level the soil and rocks, renovate the rice field to grow vegetables and dig a fish pond larger than 200m2.2.
Each season has its own food, for the past few months, Mr. Hoan's family has always had green vegetables to improve their meals. Currently, they are growing water spinach and squash, which they also sell. In their pond, Mr. Hoan raises traditional fish such as silver carp, common carp, etc. every day, using rice bran and local food sources such as banana leaves and cassava, so the fish grow steadily.

The villagers also restored chicken and pig farms. Mr. Vi Van Phuong, the pig farmer, said that his family had previously built a pig farm, but last year's flood completely washed it away. After the flood, his family dug up, repaired the foundation, and bought building materials to build a new pig farm.
“My family recently bought 5 piglets to raise. We mainly use available food sources from agricultural by-products, and expect to sell the pigs at the end of this year. My family has also converted hundreds of square meters of rice fields to grow spinach and corn…”, Mr. Phuong shared...

Do not expect or rely on
Mr. Vi Van Truyen - HeadHoa Son villagesaid: The historic flood last year caused more than 5 hectares of rice fields and fertile land of the village, which used to produce safe vegetables, to be buried by several meters of soil and rocks. It was thought that they would have to be abandoned forever, but with the perseverance and determination of the people, up to now, more than 2 hectares of fertile land and rice fields have been transformed into lush green vegetable fields and fish ponds and livestock barns with good development.

“Through the reality, 7 households have renovated their production land by hiring excavators to level the land into rice fields and fish ponds. Because the layer of buried soil and rocks is too thick, each household had to invest 20-25 million VND to have new fields. In the future, people will continue to rent machines to renovate and expand the production land area, stabilizing their lives when the State has not yet arranged a new resettlement area. Hoa Son village used to be an area specializing in growing safe vegetables to supply consumers in Muong Xen town, so people have had production experience,” added Village Chief Vi Van Truyen.

The majority of the residents of Hoa Son and Son Ha villages are Thai and Mong. The historic flood in early October last year caused difficulties for the majority of the people here. Many people believe that it will take a long time to restore their lives and production. But what we witnessed showed the great efforts of the people here.

Vice Chairwoman of Ta Ca Commune People's Committee La Thi Hong Van said that the timely support and sharing of the military, police, government, organizations and philanthropists have made the people in the flood-hit areas feel not "alone". However, without waiting or relying on others, the self-improvement in the lives of the people in the past time has proven that, despite the difficulties and hardships, the people in the flood-hit areas have upheld the spirit of overcoming difficulties and rising up.

Only after experiencing hardships and difficulties can we fully understand the hardships of people in flood-affected areas, especially flash floods. There, floodwaters can bury property and fields, but cannot diminish the extraordinary will and determination of the people here. Leaving Hoa Son village as the afternoon light gradually fades, the scene of people picking vegetables, taking care of chickens, pigs, fish ponds... and houses under construction, seeing new vitality kindling many hopes for tomorrow.
From the capital of the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, after the people had improved their production land, the district supported vegetable, root and fruit varieties, fertilizers and machinery to implement the safe vegetable production model; at the same time, supported chicken breeds for people to raise.Authorities at all levels also support the repair of roads and irrigation works damaged by floods.
