Last weekend, Russia officially deployed the state-of-the-art S-400 Triumph air defense system to the Crimean Peninsula.

This is the second S-400 unit Russia has sent to Crimea, aiming to protect the entire region from missile attacks with the world's most modern surface-to-air missile defense system.

In the context, the US last month promised to provide Ukraine with powerful defensive weapons, including Javelin anti-tank missiles.

How powerful is the S-400 Triumph?

Speaking at the official deployment ceremony of the S-400 Triumph near the town of Sevastopol, Commander of Russia's 4th Air Force and Air Defense Army, Major General Viktor Sevostyanov stated that:“Crimea's air defense system has been equipped with the most advanced S-400 surface-to-air defense missile system, which is unparalleled.”

This state-of-the-art air defense system is designed to protect Russia's borders, especially control the airspace over the border with Ukraine. Major General Viktor Sevostyanov asserted that the S-400 Triumph can be switched to combat mode in less than 5 minutes.

According to Major General Viktor Sevostyanov, the S-400 Triumph can deal with almost all targets simultaneously, including new types of missiles under development or hypersonic missiles. This system is also a reliable shield against ballistic missiles.

“The S-400 Triumph has a large coverage area and ensures that the entire Krasnodar region is protected,”Mr. Sevostyanov emphasized.

The S-400 air defense missile system is designed to detect and shoot down airborne targets within a range of 400 km and ballistic missiles within a range of 60 km. The system can detect about 300 targets and launch missiles to shoot down 36 targets at the same time at a maximum distance of up to 400 km.

Russian media said this was Moscow's surprise decision to deploy a second air defense missile division on the Crimean peninsula.

The system was first deployed in early 2017 near the port city of Fedosia.

Russia undeterred by US and EU sanctions

Rising tensions in the region following Russia’s deployment of the S-400 to Crimea are inevitable, as Washington is ready to provide Ukraine with powerful defensive weapons. The US and the European Union (EU) also extended harsh economic sanctions against Russia last month.

Several US officials revealed last month that the Pentagon had decided to increase the level of support for Ukraine and that it could include providing the country with Javelin anti-tank missiles. The entire defensive weapons package would be worth $47 million, including 210 missiles and 35 launchers. The US State Department also said that President Trump had agreed to sell Kiev lethal weapons, to help the country build its long-term military and defense capabilities.

Meanwhile, stressing the importance of Russia strengthening its defenses on the Crimean Peninsula, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week:“We know that both provocations and sabotage activities continue in the area of the Russian-Ukrainian border near Crimea. That is why Russia must take all necessary measures to protect its security from any threats,”

Mr. Peskov affirmed that countries must consider Russia's actions as aimed at ensuring their legitimate security./.
