According to the indictment, at around 11pm on May 12, 2015, Toan, Man, and Trung went out to watch football. When they passed by the monks' residence at Long Son Pagoda, No. 22, 23/10 Street, Nha Trang, the group discovered that room No. 1, 2nd floor of the monks' residence was open, so Man discussed stealing it.
Toan and Trung agreed to stand guard below while Man climbed the tamarind tree to the second floor and entered the room. They saw Mr. Mai Thanh Hung (a monk of Long Son Pagoda) in the bathroom. On the table was a laptop (worth 6.3 million VND). Man stole the laptop and fled. Discovering the thief, Mr. Hung shouted loudly and chased after him. On the way, Mr. Hung fell unconscious and was taken to the emergency room by the people and monks of the pagoda. He later died at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.
After hearing the news of Mr. Hung's death, at 2:30 p.m. on May 13, 2015, Toan and Man went to Phuong Son Ward Police Station to surrender. Trung was then invited to come in for questioning and confessed to all of the above actions.
Regarding the cause of Mr. Hung’s death, the family did not allow an autopsy, so the cause of death could not be determined. Therefore, the defendants will not be prosecuted for this act.
