Based on a synthesis of 28 scientific studies and reports on the proven benefits of breastfeeding, new research shows that breastfeeding improves the health of children, mothers, and the economy of each country.
Breastfeeding more babies for longer periods of time would save the global economy up to $300 billion a year simply because breastfed babies grow up smarter and earn more.
Not only that, breast milk also helps "significantly" increase the average life expectancy of each person, helping to reduce 800,000 child deaths each year.
In high-income countries, breastfeeding reduces the risk of infant mortality by one-third. In low- and middle-income countries, it prevents half of diarrhoea and one-third of respiratory diseases.
Breastfed children are also smarter, more studious, and have higher earnings as adults, regardless of their family circumstances.
For mothers, continuing to breastfeed for a longer period of time helps reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and helps reduce about 20,000 maternal deaths from breast cancer each year./.
