School toilet collapses, boy suffers skull fracture

A toilet in a kindergarten in Dak Lak suddenly collapsed, causing a 5-year-old boy to fall into a 5-meter deep hole while using the toilet, suffering a cracked skull and broken pelvis.

Nguyen Van An (5 years old, in Buon Trap town, Krong Ana district) went to the toilet at Krong Ana kindergarten on the afternoon of February 6, when suddenly the toilet collapsed. The child fell into the hole and was crushed by rocks and bricks.

The collapsed area was nearly 10 square meters wide and about 5 meters deep. "When I received the news, I ran to see the teachers standing around, and my son was crying below. I tied a rope and climbed down into the deep tunnel to bring him up," Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan (An's father) recalled.

Doctor Huynh Nhu Dong, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Dak Lak General Hospital, said that the boy was admitted to the hospital with a fractured skull and a broken pelvis. "After surgery, by noon today, the child's health had passed the critical stage and was gradually recovering," said Doctor Dong.

Ms. Le Thi Huong, Principal of Krong Ana Kindergarten, said that the school took over the toilet from the primary school. "On the morning of February 7, the Department of Education, the Town People's Committee and related units came down to examine and record the scene to clarify the situation," Ms. Huong said.
