The Vietnamese auto market at the beginning of the year witnessed a price reduction race and promotional and incentive programs in all segments, and SUV models priced at around 1 billion VND are no exception to this trend.

Truong Hai initiated a price war when it implemented deep discounts in February for Mazda car models.

The Mazda CX-5 SUV line with 3 versions: 2.0L single-wheel drive, 2.5L single-wheel drive and 2.5L two-wheel drive has a discount of 20 to 40 million VND. The suggested retail prices of the Mazda CX-5 models are 909, 950 and 990 million VND respectively.

With the direct price reduction for Mazda CX-5, Truong Hai's purpose is to increase sales and maintain the leading position in the 1 billion VND SUV segment for Mazda CX-5.

In January, Mazda CX-5 sold more than 800 vehicles and entered the top 10 best-selling cars of the month at 7th place.

Following Truong Hai, Nissan Vietnam also implemented a separate price reduction for the X-Trail SUV line.

Accordingly, this model is directly discounted from 40 to 70 million VND. Specifically, the Nissan X-Trail 2.0L 2WD version is currently priced at 928 million VND; the 2.0 SL 2WD version is priced at 1.008 billion VND and the 2.5 SV 4WD version is priced at 1.138 billion VND. The total discount and promotion value for X-Trail models is from 70 to 100 million VND.

Nissan Vietnam’s move to reduce the price of the X-Trail is aimed at increasing competitiveness with its direct rival, the Mazda CX-5. However, in January, the sales gap between the two models was quite large, with only 171 X-trails sold while the Mazda CX-5 reached 828 units.

Another SUV model priced at around 1 billion VND, the Honda CR-V, is also not out of the preferential race compared to its two rivals, the Mazda CX-5 and Nissan X-Trail.

Unlike its two domestic competitors, the Japanese joint venture has implemented a promotion program for about a month and a half with a total value of 45 million VND including 1 tael of SJC gold and a set of rear spoiler accessories for customers.

With deep discounts, Mazda CX-5 is having outstanding sales compared to competitors in the same segment.

Honda CR-V with 3 versions still maintains the suggested price of 1.008 billion to nearly 1.2 billion VND. In the 1 billion VND SUV segment, Honda CR-V is a model that can compete quite strongly with Mazda CX-5. In January, Honda CR-V sales reached 419 units. Some months before that, CR-V even followed quite closely with Mazda CX-5 sales.

With the Vietnamese auto market predicted to face many difficulties in 2017, car manufacturers will continuously launch price reductions and promotional programs to attract customers. However, the psychology of many Vietnamese customers is still waiting to buy cheaper cars in 2018.
