(Baonghean.vn) - On April 28, an airstrike on a children's hospital in Syria killed nearly 30 people, including many children. The airstrike was carried out in the context of the UN warning that the nationwide ceasefire was on the brink of collapse.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura warned that a humanitarian disaster was becoming increasingly evident in Syria, with fighting continuing to escalate in Aleppo, a strategic city in northern Syria, and three other locations.

A field hospital in the Aleppo neighborhood was hit by a missile fired from a warplane. It is not yet clear who carried out the airstrike. The incident killed at least 27 people, including three children and three doctors.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 150 civilians have been killed in Aleppo in just one week. Given the serious situation, Mr. De Mistura urged Russia and the US to make efforts to save the Syrian peace talks.

“In the past 48 hours, every 25 minutes, one Syrian has been killed and every 13 minutes, one Syrian has been wounded,” Mr. Mistura stressed.

The head of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Syria has strongly condemned the barbaric attack on medical facilities. The attack destroyed a vital hospital in Aleppo. MSF's representative in Syria urges all parties to refrain from attacking civilians. Do not attack hospitals, do not use weapons that cause widespread damage.

Northern Syria has seen a lot of fighting in recent months, with government forces backed by Russian airstrikes intensifying their offensive to retake Aleppo.

In February, the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cut off the opposition's supply route from Türkiye to northern Aleppo, 50 km south of the Syrian-Turkish border, initially capturing the two towns of Nubul and al-Zahraa.

The conflict in Syria has been going on since 2011. More than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in the bloody civil war that is now in its sixth year. What began as a hopeful Arab Spring has spiraled into ethnic divisions and escalated into a nationwide civil war.

About 4 million people, mostly women and children, have fled Syria to find a way to survive amid the deadly battles between government forces and rebels as well as gunmen of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).
