Syria: 65 people found after horrific massacre.

January 30, 2013 14:53

At least 65 people were found dead with their hands bound in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, in a "new massacre" since the outbreak of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The opposition blames the government, but in reality, it is impossible to confirm who is responsible for this horrific event. President Assad's army and rebel forces have been fighting in Aleppo since July, and both sides have been accused of carrying out mass executions.

The horrific massacre in Aleppo.

Opposition activists have posted a video showing at least 51 filthy male bodies along the Queiq River in the Bustan al-Qasr district of Aleppo. The victims had been shot in the head, and some appeared to be very young, even teenagers, wearing jeans, shirts, and sneakers.

Opposition forces based in Aleppo accused pro-Assad fighters of being responsible. They claimed the victims were executed and thrown into a river before drifting to opposition-controlled areas. Syrian state media did not mention the incident.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights emphasized that the video footage is evidence of a new massacre and that the total number of victims could reach 80.

Verifying information from within Syria is extremely difficult for any media outlet, due to the country's numerous restrictions on independent journalism.

An estimated more than 60,000 people have been killed in the Syrian civil war. The United Nations Refugee Agency reported on January 29th that the fighting has displaced more than 700,000 people. World powers fear the conflict could spill over Syrian borders into Lebanon, Jordan, and Türkiye, further destabilizing an already chaotic region.

Earlier, the United Nations acknowledged it could not help the millions of Syrians affected by the war without more money. The organization requested additional support at a conference this week in Kuwait, hoping to reach its target of $1.5 billion.

Speaking before the conference, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khaled al-Sabah stressed concerns that Syria could turn into a collapsing country and put the entire region at risk.

Meanwhile, the UN peace envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, reported to the Security Council that the conflict in Syria had reached "unprecedented levels of horror." According to him, Syria is being destroyed "gradually" with catastrophic consequences for a much wider region.

In Türkiye, the second pair of Patriot missile batteries deployed by NATO countries is ready for action, according to a German security official on January 29. The United States, Germany, and the Netherlands all pledged to send two missile batteries and 400 soldiers to operate them after Ankara requested assistance to bolster its air defense systems against a possible missile attack from Syria.
