Horrific accident in Ghana, at least 53 people died

(Baonghean.vn) - On February 18, Ghanaian police said that a horrific accident had just occurred in the country when a bus crashed head-on into a truck on a highway 420km north of the capital Accra, killing at least 53 people. This is considered the worst road accident in this West African country in many years.

Reuters news agency quoted police chief Maxwell Atingane as saying that the accident occurred when the Metro Mass Transit bus was travelling from Kumasi city to the northern town of Tamale when it collided with a tomato truck. The collision was so violent that at least 53 people were killed.

"Many passengers on the bus died on the spot and about 23 others were injured, many of them seriously," Atingane added. A witness said the scene of the accident was "horrific and bloody", with many passengers trapped in the wreckage of the bus.

Local police are currently investigating the cause of the accident. Ghanaian President John Mahama has also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

Ghana, like many other African countries, has a relatively high rate of traffic accident deaths due to narrow roads and poor construction quality, and drivers not strictly following regulations on speed and vehicle maintenance.
