The North Eastern Railway said the cause of the accident was a train derailment.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said: “It is a tragic accident. The local administration has provided ambulance services and all necessary assistance to the injured. Local officials are also present at the accident site to direct the rescue operations.”
The North Eastern Railway said the accident was caused by a train derailment. Indian officials fear the death toll will continue to rise as many people are still trapped inside the carriages. The latest train accident shows that India's poor railway infrastructure is one of the main causes of fatal accidents.
In early May 2014, a train derailment in Western India also claimed the lives of 19 people and injured 130./.
