Sudanese police said on the morning of June 4th that at least 38 people were killed and many more injured in one of the deadliest traffic accidents in years in the country when a bus collided head-on with a truck south of the town of El Gutaina in White Nile state.

According to Sudanese traffic police official General Abdurahaman Hassan Abdurahman, the passenger bus, traveling from Omdurman city in the capital Khartoum to El Obeid, the capital of Kordfan state in the north, collided head-on with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The serious accident occurred because both vehicles were traveling at high speed. The injured were taken to a hospital in El Gutaina, about 100km south of the capital Khartoum, for emergency treatment.

In December 2012, a similar collision between two buses occurred southeast of the capital Khartoum, killing 33 people and injuring 24.
