Why does my breath smell bad when I wake up?

The kiss after waking up seems so sweet in the movies but the reality is much harsher. So why do we not want to get close to anyone without cleaning our teeth?

The problem is not simply that we do not brush our teeth or rinse our mouths all night!

According to Mazen Natour, a dentist working at the Dental Center in Manhattan, the main reason is due to the lack of saliva secreted while we sleep. Saliva is usually responsible for cleaning odor-causing bacteria. When we are in a long sleep, we do not secrete enough saliva, so these bacteria will grow more.

So, the drier your mouth, the more likely you are to have bad morning breath. Mouth breathing, snoring, and certain medications can cause dry mouth, making morning breath even worse.

In most cases, morning breath is nothing to worry about. But sometimes, unusually bad breath can signal underlying health problems. It is often the first sign of gum disease, which is linked to heart disease and stroke.

Bad breath can also indicate an infection such as an abscess or a digestive problem such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you have unusual bad breath, you should visit a dental clinic for a check-up.

If you want fresher breath in the morning, brush and floss carefully before going to bed, as leftover food particles will be an ideal food source for bacteria to grow in your mouth while you sleep overnight.

Dr. Natour recommends brushing your teeth for two to three minutes, along with brushing your tongue (more than half of bacteria live on the tongue), and using an alcohol-free mouthwash. And to ensure that gum problems, abscesses, cavities, and other factors that cause bad breath are avoided, we should have a dental checkup once a year./.
