(Baonghean) - Retinoblastoma caused Gia Huy and Tuan Khang's eyes to be deformed like a cat's. Successful treatment has regenerated the "windows of the soul" to help the children see the light and start a new life.

Looking at the clear eyes of Le Gia Huy (born in 2016, residing in Nam Hoa commune, Nam Truc district, Nam Dinh province) today, no one would think that since less than a month old, he has been fighting retinoblastoma. The disease causes Gia Huy's eyes to become deformed like a cat's in the dark, and could cause him to lose his vision completely.

Holding her child in her arms, Le Thi Phan still remembers clearly the days of crying helplessly. After surgery to remove the left eye and administer chemotherapy to prevent the tumor from spreading to the right eye, Gia Huy's eyes were nothing but white marbles, breaking the mother's heart...

Ms. Le Thi Phan was extremely happy to see her child's eyes being treated and vision successfully preserved.

Half a year after chemotherapy, the tumor in the right eye gradually grew larger. Thinking that the child might lose his eyesight completely, the couple worried that the future of their child would gradually become bleak... Meanwhile, the amount of money borrowed for treatment piled up day by day.

In the midst of her “desperate” situation, Ms. Phan learned about the charity surgery program that Thien Tam Fund (Vingroup Corporation) was implementing. After registering and having her application approved, Gia Huy was supported by Thien Tam Fund to cover his treatment costs at Vinmec Times City Hospital (Hanoi). The conservative treatment regimen for retinoblastoma from the Curie Institute (France) – Europe’s leading cancer research institute that is collaborating with Vinmec – was used to treat Huy.

Thanks to the advantage of removing the tumor but still preserving the eye and vision, after 4 treatments in early 2017, the tumor in Gia Huy's right eye disappeared, and his right eye's vision was completely restored. After 1 month, the baby gained 1kg to the joy of the whole family.

Tuan Khang's parents were happy to see their son's eyes revived.

Similar to Gia Huy, Nguyen Duc Tuan Khang (13 months old in Hanoi) was also diagnosed with retinoblastoma. When he came to Vinmec Times City for treatment, his right eye had lost the ability to recover. The conservative treatment regimen for retinoblastoma from the Curie Institute (France) continued to be applied to Tuan Khang, helping him recover 100% of his left eye vision.

“Previously, we only dared to hope that our child’s vision would recover 50%, which would be considered lucky. But beyond all expectations, his left eye has recovered 100%. Seeing him learning to walk, babbling, and being very mischievous and active, my family feels truly happy,” Tuan Khang’s parents shared.

In order to access the latest cancer treatment methods suitable for each case, bringing the best quality of life to cancer patients, since the end of 2016, Vinmec Healthcare System has officially cooperated with Curie Institute (Paris, France) - the largest cancer research institute in Europe, treating 14,000 people with cancer each year. The close cooperation between Curie Institute and Vinmec helps patients access the world's most advanced cancer screening and treatment methods right in Vietnam instead of going abroad. If necessary, Vinmec can also send patients to participate in cancer research in Europe, creating conditions for patients to directly access the most advanced treatment methods in the world.
