Actors and actresses in swordplay films through the eyes of Kim Dung

Each work adapted from Jin Yong’s novels has received special attention since its inception. Some novels have been adapted for film more than 10 times. Therefore, martial arts movie fans often compare versions over time. Below is the author’s own assessment of some key characters in his writing career.

Kim Dung once said that he accepted the scriptwriter to reduce the content of his story to build the script and did not agree with adding details. "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" version by Ly A Bang is a work that is faithful to the original and highlights the martial arts elements of Kim Dung's stories. Ly A Bang is also highly appreciated by the writer. He believes that the actor's honest and gentle appearance is suitable for the character of Quach Tinh. Actor Ly once said that he was grateful for Kim Dung's compliments but the writer's opinion cannot represent the entire audience. Since childhood, he has understood and learned not to be influenced much by compliments and criticisms.

However, when A Bang played Linghu Chong in "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer", Kim Dung thought he was not suitable because he lacked generosity and indifference.

Kim Dung once said to Hua Tinh: "You are the Ren Ying Ying in my imagination." The image of the Saintess portrayed by Hua Tinh is also loved by many audiences.

With the role of Hoang Dung, Chau Tan was rated higher than Ong My Linh by Kim Dung: "If you have read my story, you will see that Chau Tan acted very well, she was also very beautiful. Many people criticized Chau Tan perhaps because of the deep memory of Ong My Linh's role."

When Liu Yifei was first chosen to play Little Dragon Girl, Jin Yong was worried that she was still immature and unable to fully portray the character's inner thoughts. But after watching the work many times, the writer said: "I was surprised that she was so young but so mature in the film. I was very satisfied."

Kim Dung rated the "Condor Hero" most highly as the version starring Tran Ngoc Lien and Andy Lau. He praised the two actors for being a good match and working well together. Ngoc Lien was also commented by the author as "very similar to Little Dragon Girl".

Before "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" started filming, Kim Dung commented on Lu Tung Hien: "I watched some of his previous films and felt that he had the same eyes and expressions as Linghu Chong. This guy's acting was natural and unique." After the film was released, the writer said: "The feeling that Lu Tung Hien brought was the same as what I described in the story. It was more spontaneous than Yang Guo, more spirited than Wei Xiao Bao, more liberal than Qiao Feng. He will always be Linghu Chong in the hearts of the audience."

"Louis Koo is a pretty good actor. He's handsome, but I feel like his appearance isn't suitable for playing Yang Guo. If the audience sees Louis Koo as Yang Guo, then maybe I need to revise the original work," Kim Dung once commented about Louis Koo in "The Condor Heroes."

Playing Wei Xiaobao at the age of 22, Tony Leung received high praise. Jin Yong praised him as the actor who best portrayed his character. "The Deer and the Cauldron" starring Tony Leung is also the version that the writer is most satisfied with.
