Pakistani Taliban has new leader
The Pakistani Taliban has chosen Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud as its new leader, a week after leader Mullah Fazlullah was killed in a US airstrike in Afghanistan.
According to Reuters, on June 23, the Taliban rebel branch in Pakistan chose Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud as its new leader, a week after leader Mullah Fazlullah was killed in a US airstrike in Afghanistan.
Tehreek-e-Taliban spokesman Muhammed Khorasani said it was an honor that all the group's previous leaders were martyred.
This is the first time the Taliban has publicly acknowledged Fazlullah's death.
Mullah Fazlullah was killed on June 15 in an airstrike in Kunar province, eastern Afghanistan, bordering Pakistan.
Fazlullah's death is likely to help ease tensions between the US and Pakistan, after Washington repeatedly accused Islamabad of supporting militant groups attacking Afghanistan./.
