The August 26 attacks inAfghanistanThe attack was the deadliest for US troops in Afghanistan since August 6, 2011. It came hours after Western officials warned of an imminent major attack, urging people to leave Kabul airport.
The AP news agency reported that the IS statement included a photo of what the group said was the bomber who carried out the attack. The photo showed the attacker wearing an explosive belt, a black cloth covering his face except for his eyes, and standing in front of the black IS flag.
The IS news agency Amaq named the member as Abdul Rahman al-Logari, a name that suggests the killer was Afghan.
IS also said the bomber tried to bypass Taliban checkpoints and approached a gathering of US soldiers, translators and collaborators before detonating the explosives. The group said Taliban members were also killed.
The claims have not yet been independently verified.
In an emotional speech from the White House, US President Joe Biden said the attacks would not cause the US to leave Afghanistan sooner than planned. He warned of consequences for those responsible. “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt them down and make them pay.”
Eleven Marines and a Navy medic were among the dead, US officials said. Another 15 US troops and more than 140 Afghans were wounded. US and Afghan officials warned that the death toll could rise.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said there were two explosions, one near the airport entrance and one at a hotel not far away.
The Taliban have condemned the attacks.
