Tan Ky builds 4 key products for the OCOP program
(Baonghean) - In 2019, Tan Ky district selected 4 key local products to score and standardize products towards star-rating. Those products include: Con River oranges (Tan Phu), Cao Cuong clean chicken eggs (Nghia Hoan commune), Tan Ky molasses (Tan Huong), Nghia Binh honey.
Changing the mindset of producers
In selecting and registering to develop clean chicken eggs into a key and unique product, in recent times, the Nghia Hoan commune government has actively supported and accompanied farmers to expand their scale and improve product quality.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong - Chairman of Nghia Hoan Commune People's Committee said: "The commune has created favorable conditions for land lease procedures, land conversion, planning for livestock farming areas, allowing people to expand their livestock farming scale towards commodities. When identifying chicken eggs as a typical and key product of the locality, the commune has sought ways to promote the product: participating in fairs, conferences, exhibitions...".

On the part of livestock farmers, in addition to investing in expanding the farm scale, they have focused on raising clean, safe chickens in a biological direction so that the products are recognized as meeting standards and have traceability. Mr. Cao Van Cuong in Dong Tam hamlet (Nghia Hoan commune), owner of a biosafety chicken farm, said: “My farm's chicken eggs were selected to participate in the OCOP Program. I always strive to improve the production process and improve product quality. Specifically, raising chickens according to biosafety procedures; food and drinking water for chickens are all inspected, and fiber is supplemented for chickens with natural foods... However, the farm's chicken eggs are still consumed in small quantities in the provincial market and are not known to many people.
Hopefully, when participating in the OCOP Program, being "starred" and promoted, our farm's clean egg brand will be better known, more widely consumed, and bring high income to the family."

Among the four key products of the district participating in the OCOP Program, the Xuan Ly orange growing area (Tan Phu commune) has been planned with an area of 37 hectares for production according to VietGAP and organic ecological processes. In order to create linkages in production, find output for products, and change the production form towards concentration, the district and commune have promoted the establishment of the Song Con clean orange cooperative. Currently, Song Con oranges have been granted geographical indications for Vinh oranges and are being assessed for recognition of VietGAP standards.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Phuong - Head of the Con River Clean Orange Cooperative Group said: “Participating in the program “One Commune One Product”, 25 orange growing households in the group have been trained and informed about the criteria of OCOP products, from which, in the production process, they always strictly follow the regulations and procedures to achieve clean, safe and quality standards. For example, in planting and caring for oranges, we use completely biological products, herbal pesticides, organic microbial fertilizers, and irrigation water filtered through a machine to ensure the criteria of clean oranges. At the same time, gardeners only “open the camp” to sell when the oranges are ripe enough, ensuring deliciousness and sweetness to maintain the brand name”.
Orange growers in Xuan Ly hope that, after being assessed by the district and the province, local clean orange products with traceability stamps, labels and brands will have stable output, high prices and growers will make a profit.

The clean orange area of Con River (Tan Phu commune) is identified as one of the four key products of the locality according to the implementation roadmap of the OCOP Program 2019. |
In 2019, the district determined to standardize 4 key products including: Nghia Hoan clean chicken eggs; Song Con clean oranges (Tan Phu); Nghia Binh honey and Tan Huong molasses. Accordingly, the district allocated 1.25 billion VND to organize product evaluation and recognition; build products that meet the criteria of good agricultural products; support packaging and labels; organize trade promotion activities; establish cooperatives and cooperatives.
It is worth noting that, when selected to participate in the OCOP Program, the main subjects (Cooperatives, cooperative groups, individuals) are all aware of producing quality, standard products, changing production thinking from fragmented, small-scale to concentrated, large-scale and especially chain linkage, creating a commodity area to ensure supply for the market.
Manufacturers all want their products to be recognized, evaluated, upgraded, and given stars to enhance their brand and gain a certain position in the market.

Opportunity for local agricultural products to go far
To implement the OCOP Project, the People's Committee of Tan Ky district has issued an implementation plan; established an Executive Board and a Working Group to implement the Project "One Commune One Product" for the period 2019 - 2020, oriented to 2030 with specific goals and implementation solutions. Accordingly, in the period 2019 - 2020, the district will standardize existing local products.
Specifically, the food group includes: cakes, vermicelli, and glass noodles from craft villages in Nghia Thai commune; Tan Ky oranges; free-range chickens; mushrooms, turmeric starch, molasses, goat, chicken eggs, buffalo meat, beef...; the beverage group includes: rice wine, fermented leaf wine, vằng tea...; the herbal group includes Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Polyscias fruticosa, Solanum procumbens...; the garment group includes brocade weaving; the souvenir group includes wooden products; the service and rural tourism group includes community eco-tourism combined with preserving cultural values in Tien Ky commune...

However, those products have not been truly commercialized, are difficult to consume; have low creativity, unstable quality, and products that do not meet consumer needs and tastes; the development of traditional craft villages and local specialty products is still spontaneous, small-scale, with low-skilled labor, making it difficult to receive and apply science and technology in production; lack of connection and initiative in finding product outlets, and lack of strong enough mechanisms and policies to support and promote development...
Accordingly, the district has proposed groups of solutions including: Propaganda; planning; infrastructure; human resource training; production organization development; product development; trade promotion and consumer market development; capital mobilization; mechanism and policy development.
“Implementing the OCOP Project, the district has some advantages such as truly quality products, well-regarded by the market and consumers, the thinking of producing goods according to the value chain of the subjects has become clearer, aiming at the goal of producing high-quality products, ensuring OCOP standards. However, the management, administration, production and business thinking and the proactiveness of the subjects in finding markets are still limited. The district is looking for ways to overcome the above difficulties so that the OCOP Project can continue to be implemented effectively.”
