Thus, Justice Secretary Michael Gove had to withdraw early from the race for the keys to No. 10 Downing Street.
In this second round of voting, Mrs. May won overwhelmingly with 199 votes, far ahead of the second-placed Mrs. Leadsom with only 84 votes, and Mr. Gove received only 46 votes.
The above choice shows that the new Prime Minister to succeed Mr. David Cameron will be a female Prime Minister, the second after the "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher.
Home Secretary Theresa May said Britain needed a “strong, tested” leader to lead Brexit negotiations and unite the country.
“I am delighted to have received so much support from my colleagues,” she said. “This vote shows that the Tory Party can be united and under my leadership it will be united.”
Mrs May also affirmed that a new leader would have to be able to negotiate the best terms for Britain when it leaves the European Union (EU), unite the parties and the country, and make Britain a place where everyone enjoys rights.
The process of selecting a new prime minister is expected to be completed on September 9./.
