In the past 24 hours, the world has had about 622,000 new infections and 15,500 deaths from Covid-19.

According to the global statistics site Worldometers, as of 6am on January 22, the pandemic has infected over 98 million people and claimed the lives of more than 2 million victims. About 70 million patients have recovered.

Of the 219 countries and territories with the presence of the coronavirus, the United States is the one most severely hit by the epidemic. In the past 24 hours, the country recorded nearly 168,000 new infections to its total of more than 25 million patients, and more than 3,600 cases to its nearly 420,000 deaths.

Brazil and the UK both have daily deaths due toCovid-19at over 1,000 people, proving that the epidemic is still very serious in these two countries. The two countries also recorded tens of thousands of new infections.

The main contents of the "National Strategy for Covid-19 Preparedness and Response" were announced by the White House with the statement: "We can and will defeat Covid-19. America deserves (a strategy) to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic with the support of science, data and public health".

The new US president has pledged to accelerate the pace of vaccinations across the country, with a goal of administering 100 million doses of vaccine in his first 100 days in office. To achieve this goal, he plans to push for new vaccination centers, convert gyms, stadiums and schools, and deploy 100,000 additional health care workers.

Shortly after taking office on January 20, Mr. Biden signed an executive order requiring masks and social distancing in all federal buildings and federal grounds. The new president also plans to bring the US back into the World Health Organization (WHO) after his predecessor Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the organization.

China sets up mass quarantine centers

As many as 458 monitoring centers in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province in northern China, are being used for centralized quarantine. The reason is that Shijiazhuang is one of the epicenters of the new wave of Covid-19.

According to Shijiazhuang Vice Mayor Meng Xianghong, sporadic cases in the city are gradually decreasing, and new infections are being detected mainly in monitoring centers. Those under quarantine must undergo nucleic acid tests every two days.

As of noon on January 21, a total of 34,029 people had been quarantined at the above centers.

On the same day, January 21, Hebei province recorded 20 community infections and 4 asymptomatic cases of community transmission. All were in Shijiazhuang.

Indonesia's Covid-19 death toll hits record high

Indonesia on January 21 recorded 346 deaths, the highest number in a single day so far. The country also had 27,203 new infections.

The rising infection and death rates of the pandemic have led many to worry that hospitals in Indonesia could soon be overloaded. According to statistics, the number of beds treating Covid-19 patients in hospitals is currently at 87% capacity, while the number of beds in intensive care units is at 82%.

In response to Covid-19, the Indonesian government has decided to extend restrictions on public activities in Java and Bali until February 8.

Moscow eases anti-epidemic measures

Citing the success of the mass vaccination campaign, Mayor of the Russian capital Sergei Sobyanin announced a "significant" easing of anti-Covid-19 measures.

Specifically, from January 22, Moscow reopened museums and bookstores, and allowed theaters and cinemas to welcome more visitors. Meanwhile, schools, sports schools and children's clubs resumed in-person activities, while university students continued to study remotely.

One thing that hasn't changed is that pubs and restaurants must close from 11pm, and companies need to ensure at least 30% of staff work from home.
