President Mnangagwa, 75, appointed new cabinet members on the night of November 30 and is expected to name two vice presidents after a special conference of the ruling ZANU-PF party scheduled for mid-December.

The two ministers who were sacked were Education Minister Lazarus Dokora and Labour Minister Professor Clever Nyathi. They were replaced by Paul Mavima and Petronella Kagonye, both ZANU-PF lawmakers. Nyathi will continue to serve as special adviser on national peace and reconciliation.

A government statement said the changes were necessary to “ensure compliance with the Constitution and take into account gender, demographics and special needs.”

President Mnangagwa is facing criticism for reusing officials from the era of ousted President Robert Mugabe and placing two military allies in top positions in the new cabinet.

Former Education Minister Dokora had served in Mr Mugabe's government since 2013 and had faced criticism for introducing inappropriate changes to the education curriculum and putting the school system at risk.

Previously on November 24, Mr. Mnangagwa was sworn in as President of Zimbabwe and on December 1 announced 22 cabinet members, most of whom are from the ruling ZANU-PF party. These events marked the end of Mr. Mugabe's 37 years in power and the end of the political crisis in this African country./.
