Give your child a 'summer of cleaning up'
Following the image of James - the "Western trash collector", many organizations and individuals simultaneously carried out trash collection activities or directly participated with the "Keep Hanoi Clean" group. More happily, many parents not only directly went to clean up trash but were also willing to bring their children along, with the hope that their children would have useful lessons and practice environmental awareness.
Garbage is like "rice in Thach Sanh's pot"
The habit of littering without looking where and when to throw it has been condemned by most Vietnamese people for many years. But once it becomes a habit, it is hard to break. In the middle of the capital, garbage still piles up every day. Garbage is everywhere, it is not a strange thing.
James was not the first. Before him, many “Westerners” had scheduled garbage pick-ups in Hanoi. Their actions were noticed, making our people think. But after a while, garbage was everywhere again.

Mr. James once again made many people reconsider their own consciousness and that of their community. A foreigner is willing to wade into the most stinky places in the capital to clean them up, make them more beautiful, so that his people can live a healthier life. But on the other hand, there are people who feel worried and sorry for this young man's heart. James and his teammates also affirmed: "The trash is cleaned up and there is more."
Nguyen Thu Thuy, a key member of Keep HaNoi Clean, shared: “The trash cannot be eliminated. It is heartbreaking to see James working hard all week, but everyone has to go to work and cannot participate. So we switched to the weekend, mobilizing more people will achieve better results. We need to save energy for long-term activities.”
Give your child a "summer of cleaning up trash"
Changing the community's awareness of the environment takes a long time. We all know that the actions of organizations and individuals to clean up trash are nothing compared to the amount of trash thrown away every day. An effective and sustainable measure is for education, especially for young children.
In the activities of Keep Hanoi Clean, many parents have proactively contacted the location for their children to participate, considering this as a useful playground in the summer for their children. Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lan, a member of the group, did not hesitate to join her son in cleaning up trash on Xuan Dieu Street.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lan said: “I want to combine what the teacher taught at school to give practical lessons to my children. I hope that although one individual or group cannot immediately change the current situation, many individuals and groups will change people's awareness and habits. In particular, the presence of children will make adults think about their own bad behavior.”
On the children’s side, contrary to what many parents think, they are very enthusiastic about community activities for the environment. Hoang Khanh Ng. (Class 4A5, Phan Dinh Giot Primary School) said: “Many friends admire me because I get to clean up trash. My friends also want to go, but my mother doesn’t agree.”
Children always watch and learn from the actions of adults. Therefore, although environmental education is available in schools, it is still not effective. The reason is that the lessons lack practicality and the overprotection of parents. Participating in the "garbage collection trend" this summer is a practical and necessary educational activity for children./.
