The total design capacity of the new and expanded plants is 56.1 million tons of sponge iron, 30.5 million tons of square steel billets and 30.5 million tons of flat steel billets.

According to the draft plan for Vietnam's steel industry until 2025, with a vision to 2035, recently issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, by 2020, domestic pig iron and sponge iron production output will reach 8 million tons; by 2025, it will reach 15 million tons; and by 2035, it will reach 30 million tons of pig iron and sponge iron.

Steel billet production output will reach 18 million tons by 2020; 27 million tons by 2025; and 52 million tons by 2035. The draft also sets the target of exporting cast iron and steel of all kinds by 2020 to 3 million tons; 4 million tons by 2025; and 6 million tons of cast iron and steel of all kinds by 2035.

In the draft plan, the Ministry of Industry and Trade prioritizes the development of concentrated steel production in coastal areas, where there are many deep-water ports, abundant land funds and no impact on food security; Prioritizing the development of steel production in mountainous areas, where there are iron mines with large enough reserves to invest in closed steel factories with advanced technology and appropriate scale. At the same time, limiting the development of steel production in the plains, where there are dense populations and land funds for food security.

The draft also stipulates that steel projects must apply advanced, modern technology with low raw material and electricity consumption, ensuring emission requirements, being environmentally friendly, and installing automatic monitoring systems for emissions. Projects need to develop and promulgate standards and regulations on technology, equipment, and energy consumption for iron and steel production, etc.

The development plan of Vietnam’s steel industry requires special restrictions and reductions in environmental pollution levels. New investment projects must be equipped with advanced technology to control pollution and treat waste to meet environmental standards; strictly control emissions, wastewater, dust, etc. at iron and steel production facilities; inspect the import of used metallurgical equipment, etc.

During this period, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant ministries and sectors will develop and promulgate environmental standards for the steel industry, improve the capacity and efficiency of waste management activities; research and apply technologies to recycle solid waste, heavy dust, and emissions emitted during the production of iron and steel;

In which, we will strictly control scrap metal for metallurgical production, not import used metallurgical equipment; Strengthen management and institutionalize environmental protection laws. Timely handle environmental violations. Encourage enterprises to apply cleaner production technology to save energy and protect the environment.

The draft plan also states that in the list of steel project developments, in addition to the list of operating pig iron and steel billet production projects, investment will be made to develop new projects and expand production in the period 2015 - 2035.

In particular, the Northern midland and mountainous region will expand Thai Nguyen iron and steel; the North Central and Central Coast regions will invest in 9 steel projects, mainly developing phase 2 and phase 3 of existing steel projects such as Nghi Son Iron and Steel Complex; Hoa Sen Ca Na - Ninh Thuan Steel Rolling Complex...

The factories built in the 2015-2020 period in the Northern mountainous region will have 7 factory projects. The Red River Delta region will have 4 factories; the North Central and Central Coast regions will have 8 factories and the Southeast region will have 3 factories. The projects will also include investment in developing phases 2 and 3 of the Vung Ang Formosa Steel Complex, Quang Ngai Steel; and the Hoa Sen Ca Na - Ninh Thuan Steel Rolling Complex.

According to the draft plan, the total design capacity of new factories and expansion investments will reach 56.1 million tons of sponge iron, 30.5 million tons of square steel billets and 30.5 million tons of flat steel billets./.
