Increase health insurance contributions for students.

September 3, 2015 11:58

Starting from the 2015-2016 academic year, students will have to pay health insurance premiums that have increased from 3% of the basic salary to 4.5%, equivalent to 434,700 VND.

The 2015-2016 academic year was the first year that students were covered by the amended Health Insurance Law. This group received a minimum 30% subsidy from the State budget, with the remaining 70% to be paid by the students themselves. This subsidy may gradually decrease depending on local support.

Starting this school year, each student will have to pay 434,700 VND annually, equivalent to 4.5% of the basic salary, instead of 3% as before. The increase in health insurance contributions aims to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment.

When receiving medical treatment covered by health insurance, students are still entitled to 80% of the medical expenses, with a co-payment of 20%, except for those belonging to poor or near-poor households.

Another new feature is that the validity period printed on the student health insurance card will follow the fiscal year, from January 1st to December 31st. Therefore, instead of paying for health insurance in September, parents can pay in December.

Previously, student ID cards were valid from the beginning of the school year (September or October) and expired after 12 months. If the card was valid for 12 months, it expired at the end of August or September of the following year.

Due to this change, this year first-grade students and first-year university students will have to pay for health insurance for 15 months. The validity period of the card is from the enrollment date or the expiration date of the previously issued card to December 31st of the following year. For 12th-grade students and final-year university students, the validity period printed on the card is from January 1st to the last day of the month that ends the school year.
