Zika cases spike in Mexico

The Mexican Ministry of Health added that of the total 496 infections, 256 cases were pregnant women, bringing the total number of pregnant women infected with Zika virus in Mexico to 612.
In addition, the Ministry has not recorded any cases of infants infected with Zika virus from their mothers.
Zika virus has appeared in 15 of Mexico's 32 provinces, mainly the states of Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Veracruz.
The Zika epidemic began in Brazil in the spring of 2015. While Zika does not cause serious complications in adults, it can cause brain defects and is a cause of microcephaly in newborns.
