Korean mini apples flood into Vietnam

Priced at nearly half a million VND per kilogram, Korean mini apples are still chosen by many people.

Recently, many types of Korean strawberries, apples, pears... have been imported to Vietnam, especially the sweet, sour, crunchy apples, about the size of three fingertips, with long stems like cherry stems, so they are called cherry apples (or mini apples). Cherry apples are now widely sold in supermarkets, fruit stores and even markets have this product.

Ms. Hoa, a fruit seller at Ba Chieu market (Binh Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City) said that in addition to selling regular apples, she has just received a shipment of cherry apples, a 500 gram box of about 18 apples priced at 230,000 VND.

“This type has a unique shape, is crispy and has a distinctive aroma, so many customers choose it. Every day I sell about 1-2 boxes of 6 kg. Imported apples come from Korea, so the price is much higher than many other types,” said Ms. Hoa.

Korean mini apples have eye-catching shapes.

Also selling this type of mini apple, the owner of a fruit shop in Phu Nhuan district said that in addition to the retail price of 490,000 VND per kg, wholesale customers can buy a 6 kg box for only 1.5 million VND.

"I have received hundreds of wholesale orders. Compared to regular apples, mini apples have a more fragrant taste and are only available in September and October," said a shop owner in Phu Nhuan.

Besides stores and supermarkets selling this type of apple, it is also widely sold online. The price of the product ranges from 150,000 to 245,000 VND for a 500 gram box. Some places even sell it for only a few tens of thousands of VND per kilogram. According to many fruit shop owners, because of its small, eye-catching size, this type is quite popular among apples imported to Vietnam today. However, because it looks similar to Chinese products, many stores import Chinese apples and label them as Korean or Lao Cai. However, Chinese products are spongy, not crispy, and the outer skin is not shiny like Korean apples.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Korea is the agricultural market that Vietnam imports the highest growth rate in the past 8 months. Specifically, the export rate of Korean vegetables and fruits to Vietnam increased by 93.8% in turnover, followed by the US market (up 83.5%) and Australia (up 72.7%). Currently, Korean products, apples, pears, strawberries transported to the Vietnamese market account for a large number.
