In an interview published on March 22, Ms. Vorobieva emphasized that Russia’s partners in the ASEAN bloc have shown varying degrees of interest in developing nuclear energy in their countries. She recalled that in recent years, Rosatom has made continuous efforts to support Myanmar in developing its national nuclear infrastructure, training specialized personnel, as well as exchanging experience in applying nuclear technology in the energy and non-energy sectors, including nuclear medicine.

“Thanks to the signing of an intergovernmental agreement in early March this year, the legal framework for the implementation of the relevant project has been established. However, it is clear that this is only the first step. We are determined to carry out a meticulous and systematic working process together with our partners from Myanmar,” Ms. Vorobieva added.

In early March, within the framework of the state visit of the Myanmar leader to Russia, the two sides signed an intergovernmental agreement on the principles of cooperation in the construction of a small onshore nuclear power plant (SMR) in Myanmar.

Rosatom State Corporation confirmed that the plant's capacity will be 110 MW with the possibility of expansion up to 330 MW. Earlier, in mid-January, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev announced that Russia proposed to provide Vietnam with a modern and safe nuclear power plant with two reactors, and began updating agreements with Vietnam on the construction of new nuclear power plants. Russia and Vietnam had an agreement on the construction of the "Ninh Thuan 1" nuclear power plant in 2010, but in 2016, the Vietnamese government decided to suspend the project. Currently, according to Likhachev, Hanoi expressed its desire to return to this project.
