The US Embassy stressed that this technical visit marks the first time a deployed version of the Independence-class littoral combat ship has conducted preventive maintenance overseas.
The United States has regulations for the maintenance of ships at home, at foreign military bases, and at foreign ports. Ship maintenance activities at foreign ports are also known as expeditionary maintenance.
Rear Admiral Donald Gabrielson, Commander of the Western Pacific Logistics Group, also known as Task Force 73, said this technical visit to Vietnam aims to enhance the US expeditionary maintenance capacity as well as strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
“Technical visits benefit both nations and enhance our geographic flexibility in repairs and maintaining a high state of readiness for our ships. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Vietnam and look forward to working with Vietnam to enhance stability and build mutually beneficial relationships,” said Rear Admiral Donald Gabrielson.
During this technical visit, military contractors and shipboard personnel will carry out more than 450 preventive maintenance activities at Cam Ranh International Port.
Lieutenant Colonel Fernando Maldonado, Assistant Chief of Staff in charge of ship maintenance and repair, said he had received great support from contractors, Embassy staff and Vietnamese partners for maintenance activities at Cam Ranh International Port.
