The Fortuna barge has been located in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction area, south of Bornholm Island, since January 22.

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction of two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. To date, the project has completed 2,300/2,460 km, equivalent to 94%, with only one pipeline section of about 120 km in the waters off Denmark and about 28 km in German waters remaining. However, the project has faced fierce opposition from the United States - a country that is promoting the sale of its liquefied natural gas to Europe.

In December 2019, Washington imposed sanctions on the gas pipeline, forcing the Swiss vessel Allseas to stop operating. At the same time, Russia has repeatedly stressed that the construction of the pipeline is in the interests of European consumers and is pursuing purely economic goals.

However, recently, on January 19, the US continued to impose sanctions on the Russian special vessel Fortuna and its owner for participating in the pipeline laying in the Nord Stream 2 project. The Kremlin regretted the illegal restrictive measures. In particular, Dmitry Peskov - the President's press secretary called the US sanctions a raid.

Russia's Fortuna vessel was granted a permit by Denmark to lay a pipeline in Danish waters since January 15, while Germany has also granted a permit to Fortuna with a term until the end of May 2021./.
