Lucas Ghi, the mayor of Moron, a town near the accident site, confirmed to AFP that around 50 to 60 people were injured, but he did not know exactly how many had died in the train accident.

At the scene, rescue teams and volunteers are working urgently to pull trapped passengers out of the train. Authorities have deployed helicopters and ambulances to transport victims to hospitals for treatment.

“I heard a loud noise and then people started falling down. Everyone was shocked and burst into tears,” recounted Lida, a 26-year-old passenger.

According to AFP, the accident occurred on the Sarmiento railway line near Castelar station when a passenger train crashed into an unmanned train that was parked there. Local television reported that the horrific collision happened at around 7:30 a.m. (local time).

The Sarmiento railway line is known to connect the western suburbs with downtown Buenos Aires. Also on this line, in February 2012, another train accident claimed the lives of 51 people and injured more than 700 others.
