The US Navy said that after the strong collision, the port side of the ship's stern was punctured, leading to flooding in the crew's sleeping quarters, engine room, and communications room. The sailors prevented further flooding. In addition to the missing sailors, four injured sailors were rescued, and four injured were taken by helicopter to Singapore General Hospital.
After the collision, Singapore sent three tugboats, four naval vessels and coast guard forces, while Malaysia deployed eight ships and several aircraft to join US forces to support rescue operations and search for the missing sailors.
The collision occurred east of the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, when the Liberian-flagged Alnic MC carrying nearly 12,000 tons of oil was en route from Taiwan (China) to Singapore.
Although the tanker was also damaged, no crew members were injured and there was no sign of an oil spill. Traffic in the area, through which more than 200 large ships pass each day, was also not affected.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. This is the second collision involving a US Navy ship in the Pacific in the past two months.
Previously, seven sailors died when the USS Fitzgerald collided with a cargo ship off the coast of Japan last June./.
