The US guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) recently conducted a freedom of navigation operation near the Spratly Islands.

The USNI news site quoted Reann Mommsen, spokeswoman for the US 7th Fleet, as saying: "On April 29, the USS Bunker Hill exercised freedom of navigation in the Spratly Islands, in accordance with international law."

According to a US Navy official, the ship passed Gaven Reef in Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago. Gaven Reef is one of seven entities in the Truong Sa archipelago that China illegally occupied and built into an artificial island, then established a military base on this island.

The US Navy official emphasized: "Illegal maritime claims in the East Sea are a serious threat to freedom of the seas, including freedom of navigation and overflight."

The Bunker Hill's operations came after the destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52) also conducted a freedom of navigation patrol near the Paracel Islands.
