Indian Kilo-class submarine explodes, many sailors trapped.
The Indian Navy announced on August 14 that the Kilo-class submarinenamed INSSindhurakshakThe vessel caught fire after a large explosion and sank in Mumbai harbor early Wednesday morning. There were 18 crew members on board at the time.

Mr. Vispute said that there was a loud explosion before the fire broke out. At that time, the ship was submerged, with only a part of it visible above the water.
India TV News further reported that the fire broke out at midnight on August 13th, and five sailors managed to jump from the ship and swim ashore. Three of them were taken to the INHS Ashvini naval hospital in Colaba. The rest are believed to still be trapped inside the ship.
The commander of the Western Indian Navy has arrived at the scene to direct rescue efforts and investigate the cause of the incident.
According to the Times of India, at least 16 fire engines were dispatched to Mumbai port, working with local forces to prevent the fire from spreading to other ships also docked at the port. Thick smoke could be seen rising from many locations in Mumbai, India's financial capital.
At 3:00 AM on August 14th, the fire was brought under control, and about 15 minutes later, the Indian Navy issued its first statement on the incident, confirming that 18 sailors were on board the ship when the incident occurred.
Indian media reported that the deputy commander of the local Rahandale Fire Department heard the explosion while attending a private reception. He immediately returned to headquarters to take command of the rescue operation.
