Russian 'thunder' submarine threatens US Navy

The US Navy and NATO's Combined Fleet believe that Russian submarines pose a more formidable threat than any Russian weapon.

National Interest magazine quoted the statement of US Vice Admiral James Foggo, the naval commander in the Baltops-2016 exercise of NATO forces, saying: "Russia is building stealthy diesel-electric submarines and deploying them around Europe."

The US military believes that the "Russian threat complex" is a submarine in the Northern Fleet's air defense system, using S-400 anti-ship and anti-aircraft cruise missiles and the Bastion coastal defense missile system. These weapons will be installed in the "A2/AD bubble" (access denial and restriction) system, making it difficult for allied forces to maneuver in the region.

However, both the US Navy Vice Admiral and military analysts assert that there will be no Cold War, and that Russia does not pose a threat to the existence of the West.
