The USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, ordered in 1974 and officially commissioned in 1982, has two Westinghouse-brand A4W nuclear reactors and four steam turbines, allowing the ship to reach a speed of 55 km/h with a displacement of 97,000 tons. The ship is 332.84 m long, 76.81 m wide, and 12.50 m high. The USS Carl Vinson has a strong crew of up to 5,680 people.
The USS Carl Vinson is equipped with approximately 90 aircraft of various types, including F/A-18F Super Hornet carrier-based fighters, E-2C Hawkeye early warning aircraft and EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft. The USS Carl Vinson's offensive capabilities are complemented by defensive capabilities including: 2 Sea Sparrow air-to-air missile launchers, 2 RIM short-range air-to-air missile launchers.

USS Carl Vinson can carry up to 90 aircraft of various types, including F/A-18C/D Hornet fighters, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters, EA-18G Growler electronic attack fighters, E-2C Hawkeye early warning aircraft, C-2 Greyhound transport aircraft, and SH-60 Seahawk helicopters. |
Additionally, three CIWS weapon systems provide close-in missile/aircraft defense capabilities in the event that these objects have a chance of overcoming the aircraft systems and defense capabilities of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier.
In February 2017, the US Navy revealed that the USS Carl Vinson was deployed to patrol the disputed South China Sea, a move that angered China, whose unreasonable claims of sovereignty have been rejected by the International Court of Arbitration.
In April 2017, the USS Carl Vinson was dispatched to the Korean Peninsula following a series of missile tests by Pyongyang.

However, the USS Carl Vinson did not operate alone, but was part of the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group, escorted by the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG-108) and USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112), along with the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG-57).
Of these, two US destroyers can carry up to 128 Tomahawk missiles, while the Ticonderoga-class cruiser is equipped with up to 122 Tomahawk missiles. This is the type of cruise missile that the two US destroyers USS Ross and USS Porter fired at the Syrian airbase on April 6 (April 7, Vietnam time).
