Earlier, on the evening of August 17, a truck plowed into a crowd near Catalan Square, located right next to Las Ramblas Avenue in downtown Barcelona, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 80.
Investigators believe two trucks were used, one for the attack and one as a getaway vehicle. A vehicle reportedly hit two police officers at a checkpoint in Barcelona after the van attack in the city centre. However, it is unclear whether the two incidents are related.
According to the Amaq news agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic State (IS), the group has admitted to causing the bloody attack. The statement posted by Amaq stated: "Those who carried out the attack in Barcelona were soldiers of the Islamic State and carried out this operation in response to calls to attack countries participating in the coalition (against IS)."
Las Ramblas is one of the busiest streets in Spain located in the center of Barcelona, where many shops and restaurants attract many tourists along with street artists performing until late at night./.
