Spain to issue arrest warrant for former Catalan leader Puigdemont
Spain's state prosecutor's office has said it will once again issue a European arrest warrant for former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont if he leaves Belgium and travels to Denmark as planned.
According to AP, the Spanish state prosecutor's office announced on January 21 that it would once again issue a European arrest warrant to arrest former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont if he leaves Belgium and goes to Denmark as planned.
The state prosecutor's office said that if Mr Puigdemont travels to Denmark as planned, it would "immediately request" the Spanish Supreme Court to issue a European arrest warrant to Danish authorities for the former Catalan leader.
Carles Puigdemont is scheduled to attend a discussion at Copenhagen University on January 22. It will be his first trip outside Belgium since fleeing to avoid a court summons in Spain over his failed secession bid in October 2017.
Previously, a European arrest warrant for Mr. Puigdemont was issued by the Madrid government in November, but was withdrawn after a month./.
